Heeken House was started in 2004 to develop the ideas of inventor Frank Foster. Frank was inspired to develop a simple and cost effective communication device with no bells or whistles, after having cared for a friend who had suffered a stroke. He found the week he spent looking after the friend a ‘torment’ for both him and his friend due to the lack of communication between the two of them. The friend had been released from hospital, in a wheelchair, with only a wall poster as an aid to communication. He had to be constantly observed to see if he needed anything and when he did, had then to be pushed along the poster until he could find the symbol relating to his needs. If this happened to be of a sanitary nature, it was often too late!

With this in mind Frank approached Heeken House and asked for assistance in developing his ideas. He found a sympathetic ear, members of the team also having experienced older family members who had had strokes and lost their communication skills.

Over a period of 3 years development and field testing with both end users and health care professionals, the Handy Communicator AID™ evolved as a simple low tech and cost effective AID that proved its’ worth in the field trials conducted.

The criteria for the product as a simple AID within reach of the vast majority of pockets having been achieved, it is now available to purchase by both end users, their family and friends and health care professionals.

Development of the AID has continued and it is now available in 2 versions as well as in the German language.
